How we verify every member before their first trip

Sharing a car with someone new only works if you know who they are. Here is every check a Komyut member passes — and what we never share.

Trust & Safety

When we talk to Lagos commuters about sharing a car, the first question is almost never about price. It’s “who will I be riding with?” That question shapes how Komyut works.

Checks for every member

Nobody can book or offer a seat until they have completed these steps:

  1. Email confirmation with a one-time code. No passwords to leak or reuse.
  2. Phone confirmation by SMS, so every account is tied to a real number.
  3. Government-issued ID, checked during sign-up.
  4. A live selfie matched against the photo on the ID.

Extra checks for offerers

Anyone who wants to offer seats goes further. They submit a valid driver’s licence and their vehicle registration papers, including the plate number. Our trust & safety team reviews every offerer by hand before they can post a trip, and can ask for more documents at any time.

Checks on the day

Verification doesn’t stop at sign-up. Before every trip, the app shows riders the offerer’s photo, car model and plate number. We ask riders to match the plate before getting in, and only to ride with people booked through the app.

  • Pickups happen at fixed, public corridor points — never at a private address.
  • Fares are paid in-app before the trip, so there is no cash in the car.
  • Support is one tap away inside the app, and every report goes to a real case handler.

What other members can see

Verification documents are for us, not for other members. Once you are matched, the other person sees your first name, photo, rating and the trip details. They never see your ID documents or your full card details — payments are handled by Paystack, and Komyut never stores your full card number.

In an emergency, always contact the emergency services first. Then tell us in the app so we can act on the account and support you.
